History and the developing trend of oxygen sensor

1. Non-heated oxygen sensor (thimble-type)
In 1976, oxygen sensor was invented by Bosch to reduce the Automotive exhaust emissions and for first time it was installed in Volvo 240/260 for US market. Bosch is the inventor of oxygen sensor and continue to stay ahead in the market and technology.
Non-heated type oxygen sensor has paved the future path for the emission control. It require a minimum operating temperature of 350 ℃. Therefore, it must be directly adjacent to the engine installation
In order to ensure a stable oxygen sensor output signal, it must be set in an environment of more than 300 ℃. Therefore, generally, the non-heat-type oxygen sensor must be installed adjacent to the engine, where the temperature is high. However, due to design reasons, the non-heat-type oxygen sensor has to be installed far away from the engine, where the temperature is low. In this state, the heated oxygen sensor came into being.

2. Heated Oxygen Sensor 3-core (tube type)
In order to be able to be installed far away from the engine, the bottom of the sensor (built-in sensor with a finger-shaped ceramic body) is built with a separate heater. In the exhaust ending, exhaust ending of the sensor is equipped with a protection tube to protect the ceramic sensor body from the erosion of combustion exhaust residue. This type of oxygen sensor with a heater that, can work even when the temperature is 150-200 ℃. This is the first time the possibility turn into  reality, ensuring the constant temperature of the sensor element maintain above 350 ℃.

3. Heated Oxygen Sensor 4-core (tube type)
Sensor signal can not be transmitted by out shell. Instead, it is transmitted through the fourth connecting wire attached. In this way, the additional signal can prevent the failure of of the signal of oxygen sensor caused by interruption.

 4. Plate-type oxygen sensor (also called oxygen sensor chip Planar)
Flat-type oxygen sensor is a type of finger sensor with more advanced form. Its ceramic sensor body is composed of several pieces of extended round thin ceramic planar. Its thermal efficient is high because the heat can be conducted to the ZrO2 element directly due to the heater equipped on the round thin ceramic planar. Furthermore, in the poor conditions of cold start-up phase, it can rapidly enter the working state, thereby reducing car emissions by half. Plate-type oxygen sensor can improve the resistance to lead by using double protective layer  or thicken protective layer and by narrowing the hole in the shields.

5. Flat wide-range sensors (also known as Wide Area Oxygen Sensor Wide band)
Different from previous sensors, flat-panel wide-range sensor is equipped with two measurement unit and a 6-pin connector. Rich or lean mixture of oil and the gas can be measured precisely. Even natural gas and diesel engines can also use it to control. 。
